Dental Veneers

Cosmetic Dentistry: Veneers

You’ve probably heard the term veneers used, particularly given the attention the public is now giving toward cosmetic dentistry. But to put it simply, a dental veneer is a thin layer of restorative material placed over your teeth to enhance the aesthetics of the tooth or even protect it. Typically, dental veneers are also referred to as porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates, which are made of custom made shells that work to improve one’s smile. This article is inspired by my recent teeth whitening Auckland experience.

While the two are the main elements used to protect and improve the aesthetics of your pearly whites, there are differences that you have to consider. Porcelain veneers have better resistance from stains than resin veneers while resin veneers are thinner and require less removal of the tooth during application.

How are dental veneers applied?

The dentist will extract the mould of your defected tooth to create the veneers that are constructed for an individual tooth. The customized veneers are then attached to the defective tooth with a very strong adhesive. The veneers are first shown to the patient so that the colour and the pattern of the porcelain selected by the patient is accurate.

What are the advantages of dental veneers?

You can find many advantages with dental veneers. The most advantageous feature is that it gives you the natural and healthy appearance of real, well-maintained teeth. When it is laminated on your tooth, it duplicates the features of natural dental enamel, minus the hassles of staining.

What are the advantages of dental veneers?

The biggest disadvantage of dental veneers is that in order to be applied, some of the surfaces of the teeth have to be removed. In some cases, this can be as much as 30% of the surface. The problem with this is that this will never grow back, and so it permanently destroys teeth that are otherwise healthy. And, this means that the patient’s teeth will never look the same again. Even if they later decide that they no longer want the veneers, they will not get the natural structure of their teeth back. Also, the more surface that is removed for porcelain veneers, there more the chance of trauma to the teeth. For this reason, it is essential that before the procedure is done for you, the dentist discusses a number of the teeth that have to be removed, so that you can make an informed decision about whether or not you want to proceed with the procedure.

Porcelain veneers are the most popular type of veneers and are the most aesthetically pleasing. Now that you know all about veneers, you are probably wondering how much veneers cost. The cost varies depending what you want to have done. The average cost in the US per tooth is $700 per veneer. However, if you get all of your teeth or multiple teeth done then you usually get a better deal.
